Eat, Sleep, Shops & Services

"Los Barriles has the most amenities of the smaller cities on the East Cape, with Internet cafés, restaurants and gift shops." -- Fodor's

For a small town, Los Barriles is chock full of tasty restaurants, great shops, a wonderful gallery, and a full range of lodging. The town also has fully-stocked grocery stores, multiple pharmacies, gas stations, banks, and an affordable and reputable Western Medical Clinic. Most of the cafes, taco stands, shops and hotels are all centrally located and the entire town is perfect for walking around.

Local food is outstanding, specializing in everything from fresh, locally-caught fish and homemade Mexican speciality dishes to American fare.

Restaurant row is on a street called 20 Noviembre -  but don't limit yourself to just the main road. Otherwise, you'd miss local treasures such as Maria's Cafe, which might not find if you just cruised the paved road. And you won't want to miss Caleb's bakery and Cafe (and our favorite gallery -- Galeria Los Angels) which is also tucked off the beaten path.

The bright yellow Plaza to the left of the Los Barriles fountain -- and immediately as you enter town -- is home to great shops such as the Baja Beach Co., and the Road Runner Cafe. The strip of shops on the right of the main road into town is home to Copper River Designs Jewelry - sandwiched next to the banks.

It's worth it to simply take a few hours and walk the entire town. People are unbelievable friendly. Prices are very fair, the food ranges from good to astonishing and the whole Los Barriles scene makes you feel at home right away. Quads are one of the main modes of transportation, folks are relaxed and happy. From the expat, sunkissed Northerns who make their home here in Los Barriles, to the local Mexicans -- the vibe is easy going and about as low on the stress richter scale as you can get.

Los Barriles sits smack on the Sea of Cortez. But when you're not out swimming, fishing, kiteboarding, or taking a seaside walk, wander around the town.  Money Magazine named Los Barriles as one of the 10 best places to retire -- in the world!

Maria’s Restaurant

Extensive menu of American & Mexican favorites. Everything from Chicken Cordon Bleu, made from scratch, to delcious fresh fish, beef, pork and chicken tacos and fajitas. Once you've eaten at Maria's, it's tempting to keep going back time after time. We had to force ourselves to try other restaurants -- some of which we liked very much. But we'll always return to Maria's for her fresh, home-style meals.

Charlie Hampton just opened his shop in December, where he handmakes his  divine chocolates and takes special orders.

Artisian dark, milk and white chocolate filled with carmel, nuts, and delicious fillings. Outstanding and only 5 pesos each. Go in and savor a few chocolates while Charlie tells you his incredible story of how he came to be the town's unlikely chocolatier. The quick version is Charlie  was a professional window washer in the states when he fell more than five stories. He nearly died and spent the next 6 and 1/2 years laying in bed --  recovering from his injuries.
